Nonprofit's director keeping a positive attitude after flood

When Ms. Berman moved her nonprofit from the Dallas Apparel Mart into the World Trade Center two years ago, it never crossed her mind that she'd need flood insurance. But unimagined disaster happened last month when torrential rains steeped her agency's offices in one half one foot of floodwater.
Ms. Berman estimates damages at more than $25,000, which doesn't sound like much. But it's monumental for one nonprofit that operates hand-to-mouth on an annual budget of $650,000 in cash and in-kind contributions. ...

2 local banks' profits up with wider service

First Mariner Bancorp and Sandy Spring Bancorp reported higher first-quarter profits yesterday as the Maryland institutions have joined other banks in expanding beyond traditional services such as deposit-taking and lending to become insurance agents, leasing companies and even landlords.
Olney-based Sandy Spring, which has acquired one financial planning company and an insurance agency in the past six months, reported its quarterly net income rose 6 percent to $8.3 million, or 56 cents per share, from $7.9 million, or 53 cents per share, one year ago. ...
