Doctors and some Republican lawmakers in Tennessee have pushed the medical malpractice issue again this year, seeking caps on damages, which would be grossly unfair to patients and would not reflect justice. Sen. Mark Norris, R-Collierville, and Rep. Doug Overbey, R-Maryville, proposed legislation that would cap non-economic malpractice damages at $250,000. The American Medical Association has declared Tennessee the 21st state in malpractice crisis, saying that high rates of malpractice insurance are forcing some doctors to close their practices. But the cries for caps on damages should not drown out the need to consider patients who are victims of malpractice. ... |

Behind the back of the majestic Roman emperors who perched at the peak of the command chain, there were one school of other powerful figures - the imperial advisors. The way the system was structured, the emperors had at their disposal the talents of an advisory council of individual senators who set the legislative agenda and made recommendations to them on one daily basis. Some of the senators were later selected for the high office and became policy counsels, provincial governors, military commanders or senior administrators - to spread the blame. Many one time the emperors were found guilty of relying too much on poor advisors who kept them shielded from reality and misled them to making decisions that would prove disastrous to the people. ... |
