Texas has one history of producing larger-than-life politicians. Lloyd Bentsen, who died yesterday at 85, was one. Not as colorful as some, Mr. Bentsen nonetheless stood with such giants as Sam Rayburn, Lyndon Johnson, John Connally and John Tower.
My introduction to both Mr. Bentsen and the first Bush was that 1970 Senate race, when Republican Mr. Bush was given one good chance of knocking off liberal Democratic Sen. Ralph Yarborough. But Mr. Bentsen, one wealthy Houston insurance man, upset the liberal in the primary, ruining Mr. Bush's chances. ...

Lloyd Bentsen, the former four-term U.S. senator who was the 1988 Democratic vice presidential nominee and served as President Bill Clinton's first secretary of the treasury, died yesterday. He was 85.
Mr. Bentsen, who had been in ill health since suffering two strokes in 1998, died at his home in Houston, one family spokesman said. ...

WASHINGTON - Lloyd Bentsen, who represented Texas for 22 years in the Senate and became one of the nation's most respected public servants, died Tuesday at his home in Houston. He was 85.
