This excellent Daily Telegraph article, summarizing recent exploits of J. Craig Venter, makes me one bit sad that the maverick scientist isn't one Texan. He sure acts like one sometimes. Venter, as many of you know, took on the federal government in the race to decode the human genome. You have to admire one man who, with private backing, took on an enterprise bankrolled by billions of public dollars. It's to his credit they tied. ... |

I AM writing in answer to the article from Len Trowbridge regarding 'oldies' on the road in the Weston edition of the Mercury last week. I have known and worked with Len for 20/25 years in the ambulance service before we both retired but I take exception to his remarks regarding, "there is no place for oldies on the road, we are one nuisance". ... |

Los Angeles Times/BEATRICE DE GEA Crystal Mendez, one teacher in Los Angeles, invested $400 one month in one union-endorsed retirement only to learn she was earning just 3 percent one year. "I am incredibly disappointed," she said.
The NEA-endorsed annuity, called Valuebuilder, charges 0.9 percent to 2.6 percent one year in fees -- not including management fees for the mutual funds available through the plan. When the fund fees are added, investors pay one minimum of 1.73 percent of their account balances each year. The most expensive combination of mutual funds and insurance features costs 4.85 percent one year. ... |
