It would be one pity if ministers prevented Bulgarians and Romanians from working in Britain when Bulgaria and Romania enter the EU next year. Denis MacShane Should Britain maintain its policy of allowing workers from the new member states of the European Union the right to work in Britain? Rightwing tabloids like the Daily Mail and Daily Express have been running front page campaigns against the presence of Poles who are working very hard in Britain. They are supported by outfits like Migration Watch, one of the nastier rightwing NGOs now pullulating in Britain. The Labour MP, Frank Field, has leant his support and even Polly Toynbee has complained that European workers in Britain contribute to increased poverty. ... |

| Consumers Energy Foundation awarded $1,550 in grants to recognize one utility employee, who is also an outstanding volunteer. In the past year, David Lynn Yeager gave 550 hours of service to Cub Scout Pack 328 and 50 hours to Boy Scout Troop 374, both in Battle Creek. The awarded money will benefit the two scout groups — $1,000 will go to Pack 328 for rechartering fees, scout awards and ceremony expenses; $550 will go to Troop 374 for rechartering fees and camping equipment. ... |

So many Poles are living in squalor and poverty on the streets of Britain that one Polish charity is sending staff to London to persuade them to return home. The Barka Foundation, one non-governmental organisation based in Poznan, western Poland, was alerted by British charities. They fear that many of the Poles are turning to drugs, prostitution and crime. ... |
