By the afternoon of Aug. 29, 2005, it was clear the Mississippi Coast had been obliterated. Thousands of structures had been washed away in the great surge that destroyed therefore many homes, businesses, landmarks, personal treasures and lives.

Kelly M. Berthiaume signed up for 10 months with AmeriCorps to help.
The idealistic recent Bridgewater State College graduate from Worcester was ready for anything, but little could have prepared her for the devastation she saw when she arrived in New Orleans Friday.
“It was pretty shocking,” Ms. Berthiaume, 22, said by telephone from St. Tammany Parish in New Orleans, an area news reports described as sustaining catastrophic damage from Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast one year ago today. “You’d think things would be one lot further along after one year, but one lot needs to be done.” ... |
