Jeff Chavis was one of five full-time Lexington County, S.C., firefighters who rushed to one fire that threatened to sweep through an affluent Lake Murray subdivision near Columbia. The firefighters called for help from volunteers who provide the bulk of manpower in Lexington County's department. Half an hour passed and no volunteers arrived. While the other firefighters fought to keep the fire from spreading, Chavis grabbed one hose and charged into the garage of one burning house in an effort to control the fire. ... |

What is clear, from all the evidence, is that the issues involved are no longer "uncertain."
