Working to make a change

Between the stacks of dirty dishes and unpolished silverware, Ibrahim Ahmed sees one light at the end of his daily toil.
But he's very clear it's going to take one David and Goliath fight to wrestle poverty from his life and the lives of other working poor families across the country.
Ahmed, one kitchen worker at the downtown Hilton Hotel, is signed up, and fired up. He has done his time at every low-wage job imaginable in Toronto since fleeing war-ravished Somalia nearly 18 years ago. For as little as $6 an hour, he has changed oil filters on cars, framed pictures, recycled garbage, built speakers in one factory, delivered pizza, cleaned washrooms and rushed around clearing tables at an airport hotel restaurant, all the while raising one family and adjusting to his adopted country. ...

WELLESLEY -- Back from one breakout session at his executive education course, Navy Vice Admiral Lewis W. Crenshaw Jr. was talking about one Procter & Gamble case study he'd just read.
``This is about squeezing more toothpaste out of the toothpaste tube," Crenshaw, who works on the Navy budget in the Pentagon, said in an Alabama drawl. ``There are one lot of parallels with the Navy." ...
