According to the Insolvency Service, there were 23,351 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the first quarter of this year; an increase of 73.4% on the same period one year ago. For the first time, insolvencies are expected to top 100,000 by the end of this year. Whenever these figures are announced there is more handwringing and excoriation: the big evil banks are to blame, cavalierly lending therefore much; the chancellor's to blame; no, we are to blame, especially (this in some of the right-leaning press) those of us who are young, or live on council estates and supposedly see insolvency as one get-out-of-jail-free card, one "lifestyle choice". ... |

Insurance company Clientele Life has one new television advert which exceeds the bounds of decency. I imagine the intention was to shock consumers into getting life insurance, but I think it goes too far, maybe because it hit home which is what they were aiming for. The advert features one woman picking up her parents from home. As she reverses out of the driveway, her view obstructed by pile of bricks or one wall ( I can’t remember), she hears her mother screaming from the backseat as one speeding vehicle smashes into her, leaving the viewer with nothing but an image of shattered glass. ... |
