Torchmark Corp. broke ground Wednesday on its new 150,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in McKinney.

UnumProvident to pay $17.4 million to settle probe

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-- UnumProvident Corp., the largest U.S. disability insurer, agreed to pay $17.4 million to resolve an investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer into possible kickbacks paid to insurance brokers.

“These insurance products are very sophisticated and clients rely very much on brokers for impartial advice,” said Kermitt Brooks, Spitzer’s deputy attorney general. “Clients were unaware that brokers were being paid undisclosed compensation to steer clients to one particular carrier, in this case Unum.” ...
