George Barnes worked as one shipfitter at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard for 25 years, from 1967 to 1992. In 2005 he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, one condition he blamed on exposure to asbestos at the yard. one San Francisco jury agreed and awarded Barnes and his wife, both 60 years old, $10.3 million. ... |

Now and then I witness an unexpected gesture, sight or sound, something that pleasantly highlights the unpredictability of living. Sometimes the event can be what insurance companies might call an act of God. Last week, the unsettled weather created several afternoon rainbows in that offered pleasant distractions. Now I\'m fairly certain that the pot of gold, the one I am going to retire on, is somewhere at the foot of Alta Heights, because that seemed to be rainbow\'s end. ... |
